Farming: An Impact on my Life

By Anonymous

According to, less than 2% of people claim farming as their occupation in the United States. The amount of farmers in the United States has been declining over the last couple of years. Luckily, my father is one of the few farmers in the U.S. and I am very thankful for it.
The first reason that there are not many farmers in the U.S. is because farming is a very difficult occupation to go into. It is stressful because the weather is very unpredictable. Sometimes it does not rain at all, and sometimes it rains too much. My father has gone through this struggle many times, but I am thankful for it. I am thankful because he has taught me that when we have doubts about things, such as the weather, we need to trust that God will take care of it and He will not let things go bad.The next reason that there are very few farmers is because of how expensive it is to start this occupation. Farmers need to buy land and machinery, neither of which are cheap purchases. My father was born into farming. His father was a farmer so he already had land and machinery.

The next reason I am happy that my father was a farmer is because it has taught me good work ethic. There is always a job that needs to be done on a farm. When I was little, I always wanted to be my dad’s little helper. He would give me little jobs to do that could help him around the farm. Most of the time, my job was to clean. I swept his shop a countless amount of times and washed the tractor windows until they were spotless, only for them to get dirty again in the next couple of days. I have watched my father work day in and day out since I was a little girl. Some days he would wake up at sunrise and would not be back home from work until very late at night. Seeing this as I grew up made me realize that you need to work hard to get what you want. It has helped me in school because I know that things are not just handed to me and I need to work for it. Even if it’s midnight on a school night and I’m exhausted from playing a volleyball game, I know that I have to finish my homework because I saw my dad work hard through to night to get things done when they needed to be.

The final reason I that I am proud that my dad is a farmer is because I had the privilege of growing up on a farm. Growing up on a farm is a blessing because I have more privacy and it is very peaceful. If I grew up in a big city, I would not have been able to see the beautiful stars glisten in the sky at night, I would not be able to go for ride on the four wheeler down gravel roads, and I would not be able to go over to see my grandparents’ house whenever I want to see them.

Overall, I am blessed to have a farmer as my father. It has shaped my life everyday since the day I was born. Without farming, the world would not have all that food to eat, and I would not be the person that I am today.
